Learning objectives#
- Write descriptive anchor text
- Build hub-and-spoke structures
- Add breadcrumbs and related links
- Find and fix orphan pages
Explanation#
Links pass context through anchor text: “learn the useEffect hook” beats “click here”.
Hub (pillar) pages link to detailed pages (spokes), which link back and to siblings — clear topic clusters.
Breadcrumbs, previous/next links and “related tutorials” sections give every page several internal links.
Important pages should be reachable within three clicks from the home page. Orphan pages (no internal links) are rarely crawled.
Code example: Links in a lesson#
<nav aria-label="Breadcrumb">
<a href="/">Home</a> › <a href="/tutorials">Tutorials</a> › <a href="/tutorials/react">React</a> › useState
</nav>
<p>State updates re-render the component. To run code after rendering,
use the <a href="/tutorials/react/useeffect-hook">useEffect hook</a>.</p>
<aside>
<h2>Related tutorials</h2>
<ul>
<li><a href="/tutorials/react/props">Passing data with props</a></li>
<li><a href="/tutorials/javascript/closures">JavaScript closures</a></li>
</ul>
</aside>
Each lesson links up (breadcrumb), across (related) and forward (contextual link) with descriptive anchors.
This example is illustrative. Copy or download it and run it in your own environment; the expected output is shown above.
Step-by-step explanation#
- Breadcrumbs link to parent sections.
- Contextual links use descriptive anchor text.
- Related links connect sibling topics.
- Track pages = hubs; lessons = spokes.
Real-world use case#
Adding “related tutorials” to every lesson helped new lessons get crawled and indexed within days.
Common mistakes#
They tell users and search engines nothing.
Use real <a href> elements so crawlers can follow them.
Best practices#
- Descriptive anchors
- Topic clusters with hubs
- Breadcrumbs + related links
- No orphan pages
Remember this#
Anchor text = context.
Hubs ↔ spokes.
Real <a href>, max ~3 clicks deep.
Practice exercise#
