Learning objectives#
- Write JSON-LD with schema.org types
- Add breadcrumbs and article markup
- Validate with Google’s tools
- Follow accuracy guidelines
Explanation#
JSON-LD (a <script type="application/ld+json"> block) is the recommended format. Vocabulary comes from schema.org.
Common types: Article/TechArticle, BreadcrumbList, Organization, Product (with Offer and Review), Event, LocalBusiness, VideoObject.
Rich results are not guaranteed; Google decides. Some features change over time (FAQ rich results are now shown only for a limited set of authoritative sites).
Markup must match visible content. Fake ratings or invisible content can lead to manual actions.
Code example: Article + breadcrumbs#
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@graph": [
{
"@type": "TechArticle",
"headline": "SQL INNER JOIN with Examples",
"dateModified": "2026-10-29",
"author": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Techie Babaji" },
"publisher": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Techie Babaji", "url": "https://techiebabaji.com" }
},
{
"@type": "BreadcrumbList",
"itemListElement": [
{ "@type": "ListItem", "position": 1, "name": "Home", "item": "https://techiebabaji.com/" },
{ "@type": "ListItem", "position": 2, "name": "SQL Server", "item": "https://techiebabaji.com/tutorials/sql-server" },
{ "@type": "ListItem", "position": 3, "name": "INNER JOIN" }
]
}
]
}
</script>
The Rich Results Test detects a valid Breadcrumb and Article; search results can show the breadcrumb trail.
This example is illustrative. Copy or download it and run it in your own environment; the expected output is shown above.
Step-by-step explanation#
- @graph holds several entities in one block.
- TechArticle describes the lesson and its update date.
- BreadcrumbList mirrors the visible breadcrumb.
- Validate before and after deploying.
Real-world use case#
An online shop’s product pages show price and availability in search results thanks to accurate Product markup.
Common mistakes#
Violates guidelines and can trigger penalties.
Never invent ratings to get stars in results.
Best practices#
- Use JSON-LD
- Only accurate, visible information
- Validate with Rich Results Test
- Monitor enhancements in Search Console
Remember this#
